What Does Tri 21 Stand For?

Right behind being asked how to play the game, this is the most common question we get asked. After much brainstorming for a catchy name, our team eventually agreed that Tri 21 was IT! Keeping the concept simple, by playing off the triangular shape (Tri) of the boards combined with the winning score of 21. However, it just couldn’t remain that simple though…

It didn’t take long before the coincidence of this name choice brought a whole new meaning to our mission. Tri 21 is also short for Trisomy 21, a genetic chromosome 21 disorder, commonly known as Down syndrome. As the most common chromosomal anomaly in humans, affecting more than 350,000 people in the United States, we now realized our simple name has led us to our purpose!

We, as a company, stand for quality time with family. We understand this can be represented in many forms, but our way of bringing family together is through QUALITY time spent together, interacting with each other, verses just QUANTITY time sitting in front of some screen.

We also stand for inclusion, regardless of age and ability. Terri Brummer, one of the 4 owners of Tri 21 is a Special Education Teacher in Buffalo, MN and works with families affected by down syndrome and other disabilities throughout the year. She encourages her students to find connections to people, to form meaningful relationships. It sure sounds funny to say, “My best friend is my television/ipad/computer/game system,” and her students do see the humor in how ridiculous this sounds.

The sad truth is that screen time is stealing opportunities to make friendships, to nurture relationships, to communicate with our voices. Staying active and maintaining family connections directly provides a positive impact on a family’s well-being. We encourage each of you to take the time to hug more, talk more to each other, and acknowledge one another’s accomplishments.

Our yard game can be played by all ages and all abilities! Before you know it, high-fives are happening, smiles are beaming, communication is happening, academic math skills are being put into play, relationships are strengthening and a fun competition is brewing.

Celebrate all abilities and embrace differences! Although Tri 21 was found to connect to Down syndrome, we ARE embracing all abilities by making contributions to the MN Special Olympics program. We would love your help to support our mission to provide donations to the MN Special Olympics program as well. You can do so here.

Differences bring us together & together we make a difference!

Tri 21 Boards: What is it?

Happy April! Spring has sprung (or soon to spring for us northerners)... but If you’re like us, we LOVE spending time outdoors. With the weather warming up, we are getting excited about spring and summer!

Regardless if you have big plans this year or just plan on enjoying each day by day, enjoy them outdoors. Tri 21 Boards are perfect for any gathering big or small — What is Tri 21 and what makes it so special?

Tri 21 Boards is a Minnesota family-run yard game company trying to bring family-fun to everyone. We are a family built on the foundation of “togetherness” and feel that has been slipping further away in today’s technology-driven world. Family is everything and healthy relationships build from quality time together.

Tri 21 has been in our family for over 2 decades. What first started out as a new game at our cabin, soon became a way of life for us. We now play it at virtually every gathering — at the cabin, BBQ’s, bachelor & bachelorette parties, grad parties, birthday parties, and many times just because friends are over. We have multiple boards, so obviously we have to set up a bracket and spend the whole day competing for that number one spot. (A creative entry fee can just make things interesting!) To our family, this isn’t just a game, it’s now our culture, our tradition.

This game has just recently become a new sensation—just launched one year ago in April 2018, and has already been enjoyed by families across the United States. We crafted a triangular shaped yard game that can be played virtually anywhere with it's extremely portable size. Over many years our entire family has molded this washer-toss game into what it is today (extremely awesome, if we do say so ourselves) by combining rules and gameplay from multiple other popular yard games as well as creating some of our own rules. This strategy filled game can replace all those other yard games as it brings entertainment for hours.

The Tri 21 team is owned by a family of creative minds who enjoy finding fun ways to spend time with friends and family. We are Pete, Terri, Adam and Paige — 4 family members with 9 to 5 jobs, but have a mission to share this awesome game with the world (although it's only available in the U.S. for now… sorry). We are bringing new life to the world of yard games.
